How to Protect Your HVAC System from Hurricane Milton

Predicted course of Hurricane Milton

Sarasota friends and neighbors, Hurricane Milton is barreling our way, and while your safety is the top priority, D&D Air wants to help you protect your home comfort investment, too! Just like you’re boarding up windows and securing loose items, your HVAC system needs some attention before you evacuate.

Here’s your D&D Air Hurricane Prep Checklist for your HVAC System

Power Down

  1. Turn off the electricity to your HVAC system at the breaker box. This prevents electrical damage from power surges and potential water intrusion.
  2. Turn off the gas supply to your furnace. This eliminates the risk of a gas leak if your home sustains damage.

Secure the Outdoor Unit

  1. If possible, cover your outdoor unit (condenser) with a waterproof tarp or plywood. Secure it tightly to prevent it from blowing away or being damaged by flying debris.
  2. If you have hurricane straps installed, make sure they are securely fastened. If not, consider having them professionally installed before the next hurricane season.

Clear the Area

  1. Remove any loose objects or debris from around the outdoor unit. This includes patio furniture, plants, tools, and anything else that could become a projectile in high winds.
  2. Trim any trees or shrubs that could fall on the unit.

Indoor Precautions

  1. Close and seal all windows and vents. This helps prevent water damage and reduces the strain on your HVAC system if it turns on unexpectedly.
  2. If you have a window AC unit, remove it if possible, or securely board it up.

After the Storm

  1. DO NOT turn your system back on until it has been inspected by a qualified technician. Even if there is no visible damage, there could be hidden issues that could cause further damage or pose a safety hazard.
  2. Call D&D Air for a post-hurricane inspection. Our expert technicians will check for damage, clear any debris, and ensure your system is operating safely and efficiently.
